取り上げてみます。

ちょっと英字新聞にチャレンジしましょう。
６月５日のWall Street Journal からの抜粋です。

タイトルは
Kagawa Move to Manchester United Raises Japan Soccer Profile
となってます。

で、説明したい記事はこれ（一部省略してます）、
Financial details of the deal weren’t disclosed but U.K. press reports said
the transfer will cost the English club as much as £18 million
― not chickenfeed, but about half the price tag
that usually accompanies megastar soccer deals in Europe.

さて、香川の移籍金ははした金？　それとも

今日取り上げようと思ったのはchickenfeedという単語。
辞書などでは chicken feedと分けて記載されることが多いです。

ロングマンの定義では
an amount of money that is so small that it is almost not worth having
「少ないために価値がほとんどない金額」

となります。客観的な金額設定があるわけではなくて、話し手の価値観からみて
の判断となるのが多いですね。

The bank offered to lend us £1,000 but that's chicken feed
compared to what we need.

この場合は「我々が必要とする金額に対して価値がない」と言ってます。

さて、記事を見てみましょう。

ちなみに文中に出てくる
U.K. press reports というのはガーディアン紙（イギリスの高級新聞）
the English clubはマンチェスター・ユナイテッドのことです。

「契約に関する金銭面の詳細は明らかになっていないが、英国の報道によれば」

「この移籍で英国のクラブ（マンUのこと）が支払うのは１８００万ポンドになる。」

「これは安い金額ではないがヨーロッパで超大物の移籍に通常伴う金額の約半分
である。」

つまり、はした金とは言わないが、超ビッグと比べたら半分出ぜ！ということ。
